Lots of people have asked if I can talk about what I do inside Nokia yet. And now I can. Pretty soon you can download OS 2006 Edition for the Nokia 770. In there is a new application called Contacts. That is what I have been working on.
So what does it do? Well, obviously it stores your contacts; it is a global addressbook inside the 770, and it works together with the Email application and the new Chat and VoIP applications.
For Instant Messaging It is also your buddylist for your GoogleTalk and Jabber accounts. Showing who is online and who is offline.
Part of Contacts: the SpeedDial home applet
I work inside a team called OSSO (Open Source Software Operations). Our goal is to use open-source software where possible.
In line with that strategy, the building blocks we choose for our addressbook are evolution-data-server (or actually the one from OpenedHand) and galago. And for Instant Messaging the new Telepathy framework.
The good thing about open-source is what third parties can do with it. That is what maemo.org is all about. I'm eager to see what others will do with the new 770 platform.
For instance, interesting to see is what OpenedHand will do with their beautiful looking Dates application. Because with evolution-data-server inside, calendaring can be installed alongside addressbook.
And what will happen with Telepathy on the desktop (Ubuntu IM integration). Because for the 770, the Telepathy framework brings Instant Messaging that is disconnected from a single application, it is just everywhere, integrated in the system. Is that not the dream for Gnome too?
Linux Hacker?
If you think this sort of stuff is cool, here is some good news.
If you want to work with me, follow up on this job application. Or contact me on GUADEC!
If you just like to hack, we are looking for an implementation of avatars in telepathy-gabble, so that we can synchronize the avatars in GoogleTalk with the addressbook. I will see to it that whoever implements this will get something as a token of our appreciation ;)
